Ideally most settings will be set up as part of your office standards, and you can pick up their parameters to make sure everything appears as it should. When available use the Favourites to activate a Tool with all its setting pre-defined.

double click tool icon
Info Box (Window>Palettes>Info Box)
Typically you will briefly check the following before placing or drawing anything (from top to bottom in the Tool Settings window):
1. Geometry & positioning: correct story & dimensions.
2. Floor plan & section: correct pens and line types.
3. Materiality.
4. Correct Layer.
You will also see in your plan view if pens and fills are correct.
Review placed elements in 3D for correct detail, position, size and materials.
